Lisle Ellis: FORMINGS -- Composition for Improvisers

A workshop on Formings, Ellis' compositional design that utilizes graphic and conventional notations, harmonic and rhythmic constructs and strategies, for determining interactive behavior for improvisers. The workshop will Investigate how particular roles assigned within the Formings framework influence the rate and change of time.

Lisle Ellis is active as a musician - bassist/composer/improvisor: acoustic & electronic - visual artist, and lecturer in creative process and jazz history. His musical persona is a product of the influence of some conservatory training in Canada, the now legendary Creative Music Studio, and the 1970’s New York City Loft Jazz scene. After leaving his native Vancouver, Ellis, an improvising bassist whose three decades of work spans Cecil Taylor to Matmos, gained experience in the communities of Toronto, San Francisco, and Montreal before taking up NYC residency in 2005.
